Librarian
Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall (Havelock Road)
A new librarian is required to help develop the library of Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall, which includes a vast amount of rare and out of print literature on Sikh Scriptures, arts and traditions. This job will entail the librarian to create a new accessible cataloguing system using modern technology to make the library more accessible to the sangat and researchers.
Hours/Pay: Flexible Hours, can be Part or Fulltime.
Can be on a volunteer basis and if required remuneration based on experience

Responsibilities and Duties:
- Create new catalogue system for all books with web based access for members
- Create new system for the borrowing of books
- Overall rearrangement of Library using a specific classification system
- Liaise with the Pothi Seva team regarding books in need of repair
- Ensure the security of the library
- Organise, supervise and train volunteers
- Respond to Sangat suggestions and requests
- Identify appropriate books to add to the collection
- Identify books not suitable for the library and liaise with local libraries/bookshops to transfer them or sell them.
- Create a system enabling the donation of suitable books by Sangat
Liaise with other local gurdwara libraries to facilitate the exchange of books where appropriate
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of reading Gurmukhi is essential as a large number of books are in Gurmukhi.
- Knowledge of transliterating Gurmukhi, important for adding title names of books to new databases.
- A basic knowledge/interest in Sikh history/philosophy will be helpful in the categorisation of books/pothis/steeks etc.
- Experience using IT
- Knowledge of cataloguing systems
- Formal qualifications and experience of working in a Library are desirable but not essential as an ambition, enthusiasm and vision are perhaps more important.
- Support can be given for the right candidate to apply towards certification with the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.
Caretaker
We are looking for an experianced handyperson for all of our sites at sri guru singh sabha southall.
- Plumbing and Electrical work
- Painting and decorating
- Assembling furniture or equipment
- Maintaining property exterior through the different seasons
- Building and repair works
- Help with health and safety practices
- Gardening/landscaping installation and maintenance
Hours: Flexible
Remuneration: Competitive based on experience
